Scripture Colossians 3:12-17
During the dark days of the COVID virus, we were reminded of the importance of relationships for every age and on every level. We were created to be in relationship with God. We are called to be in relationship with each other and the world. This series will focus on some of the relationships in our world and lives. We will explore what God has to say about our relationships in church, at home, with friends, and for couples. Come join us as we focus on building better relationships. This week we focus on our relationships at church.

Scripture Matthew 24:36-44
It’s a new year and you might be thinking about making some changes to better your life. Right? Let’s be honest though, change isn’t easy. It isn’t impossible, either. Here’s the thing, your future self is a result of the decisions you make each day. Who are you becoming? Are you becoming the person God wants you to be? In this four-part series, we’ll see how making a few small habits and/or breaking a few small habits can change how you see yourself today. Furthermore, they can transform you into the person God desires you to be tomorrow. Come join us on January 1st as we kick off our new series - 21 Days!
Scripture Matthew 3:13-17
It takes 21-90 days to make a lasting habit. Habits can be good (ex. Saying kind words to strangers with a smile). Habits can be bad (ex. Speeding in your car). Understanding who we are can make a difference to what habits we choose. What we choose can make a difference in our lives and God’s Kingdom. Today, we remember Jesus’s baptism and what it says about our own baptism and what that means as we strive to make good habits that bring about lasting change.

As we continue our journey of life and faith, good habits can help us to be the people Jesus wants us to be. What helps can we utilize to keep developing good habits. This Sunday we wrap up our series, 21 Days. We will be discussing 3 C’s that help us develop and strengthen good habits. Come and join us as we reflect on our living our lives for God and His Kingdom.
1. Why is it necessary to live with purpose and discipline?
2. Why did Paul lead a disciplined life?
3. What actions or circumstances could disqualify a person from being rewarded by God for serving Him?
4. What can we do to be assured of finishing your life well?
5. How can neglecting spiritual disciplines (such as prayer, Bible study, worship, etc.) disqualify a Christian from having an influence on unbelievers?
6. What are the 3 Cs that Pastor Jonathan discusses in his message this week? How can these three C’s help us develop and build good habits in our journey
of faith?
Scripture Matthew 24:36-44
It is that most wonderful time of the year! Time to celebrate with friends and family. There will be decorations, special foods, special gatherings, gifts, etc. Are we ready for all that is ahead. The scripture tells us Jesus is coming back again.
What does this mean for our lives and how can we be ready for this gift we remember at Christmastime. Join us in this Sunday as we consider this gift.
1. Did you experience God in any unexpected ways this week? How is he calling you to respond?

Scripture Matthew 3:1-12
One of the gifts that God offers that we reflect on in this season is repentance. It is through this gift that acknowledge the good news of this season that Jesus is our Savior. We all make mistakes. We all fall short of the glory of God. We all fail to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. What a blessing that there is no bounds to God’s mercy and forgiveness. Come as we reflect on this gift during this Advent season.
1. How do feel about repentance? Why do you think a lot of people think it’s a ‘bad word’ or unpleasant topic?
2. Why is repentance so much a matter of the heart? Can you give an example from your own life?
3. What does it actually mean for John to be preparing the way for the Lord, making straight paths for him? What is the significance of this prophecy (cf. Isaiah 40:3)?
4. How do we prepare the way for the Lord today?
5. If you had to explain repentance to someone who had no experience of Christianity, what would you say?
6. How does this passage show us what repentance is really about? (You might like to discuss the difference between ‘confession’ and ‘repentance’.)
7. How is repentance one of God’s great gifts for us?
Scripture John 1:1-5; 5:1-9
It's Christmas time! The best time of the year. It is full of family, traditions, decorations, and gifts. We have a God who truly loves to give the best gifts we could ever ask for. One of these amazing gifts, is the gift of healing. What does that even mean, right? What this means, is that our God wants to heal your heart, soul, body, mind, and spirit. All. Of. You. Come as we reflect upon this amazing gift God has given to us at our 9:30 service.
Scripture Matthew 1:18-23
It is the most wonderful time of the year. One of the ways we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the greatest gift in the world, is through the giving and receiving of presents. Presents are a huge part of our celebration of the season. As we celebrate may we not overlook one of the greatest gifts of this season and that is God’s presence
offered to all of us. Today, we will reflect on this gift and what it means for us now and in the future.
Read Matthew 1:18-23 and then discuss the following.
1. Our concept of the Christmas story has become so sanitized over the years that we often fail to grasp the human reality of it. What do you think would have been Joseph’s reaction to learning that Mary was pregnant? What do you think of Joseph’s plan? (V. 19)
2. What fear on Joseph’s part does the angel address here?
a. What would it “cost” Joseph to go ahead and marry Mary?
i. Can you recall a time when you were certain that God was nudging
you toward this kind of obedience? How did you respond?
ii. Does anyone in your group feel that they are currently in this
kind of situation?
iii. What are the “costs” involved? What is most frightening about
it?
b. How does the angel convince Joseph to go ahead with the marriage and become the adoptive father of Jesus?
c. What was the importance of Joseph’s connection to the story of Jesus’ birth? (hint proclaimed by the prophets)
3. What does it mean that Jesus is your Savior?
4. What does it mean that Jesus is Immanuel – God with us? How does this knowledge help us in our daily walk of life and faith?
5. Why is it so important that no other person on earth, besides Jesus, has ever been or will ever be physically fathered by the Holy Spirit (God)? Why is Jesus called “the only begotten Son of God”?
6. How can you help share with others this Christmas the Jesus is Immanuel?
Scripture Ephesians 5:15-17
What would happen if the world was a better place? What would happen if there was a place where everybody could come and experience the love and grace of Jesus? What would happen if everyone encountered Jesus? What would happen if we sought to be Christ’s hands and feet? What would happen if everyone belonged to a group that prayed for them, encouraged them, and helped them to share Jesus with others? What would happen if we sought to build up the church and to expand God’s Kingdom here at Asbury? As we worship over the next four weeks, we will reflect on what could happen if we pull together and seek to make a difference in and through Asbury. Come join us on this journey of life and faith.
Time is one of God’s greatest gifts. How do we spend our time? Does our time reflect an importance for God and His Kingdom? Today we will reflect on what would happen for Asbury and God’s Kingdom if we utilize more of this gift for God’s purposes?
1. What does the term “be careful” tell us?
2. What is the difference in how unwise people and wise people live?
3. How can we make the most of our time?
4. What kind of activities redeem the time? What kind of activities do many people engage in that are not redeeming the time?
5. What is the reason given for why we should make use of our time?
6. How can we understand what the will of the Lord is?
7. How can we be filled with the Spirit?
Scripture Romans 12:3-8
In God’s Kingdom we are a living organism. We are all one body. God has given to us different abilities and talents to be used to build up the church and to help Him expand His Kingdom. This week we reflect on the question what would happen if we gave more of our ability to God. What would happen in and through Asbury Church? What would happen to God’s Kingdom? Come journey with us as we consider what to do with all the blessing God has given to us.
1. Why is it so important for us to have a sober judgment of ourselves? What criteria does Paul give us to use for sober judgment (v3)?
2. What is the significance of understanding that we are one body in Christ and individually members one of another? How does this change how you view yourself and others
3. Take time as a group to discuss the variety of gifts and how you see God’s grace at work in one another. Share your honest questions, struggles and affirmations.
4. If you are a member of the Body of Christ, what gift(s) has the Lord given you for use in the body? Why is the word “if” significant in the question above?
5. How have these verses changed the way you think of yourself?
6. How have they changed the way you view your church?
7. How will they change the way in which you use your gifts in and for your church? What are you taking away from this passage?
Scripture Matthew 25:14-30
People make so many promises. Sometimes they keep them and others times they let us down. In the Bible, God makes many promises to you and me and the world. Do we trust God to do all that He says He will do? What would change if we trusted God to do what He says He will do in our lives, in our church, in our society and world. Today we reflect on the promises of God and consider what they mean for our lives. Come worship with us as we explore the endless possibilities that exist when we believe in God’s promises
1. What does it mean for someone to make a promise to someone?
2. Name a time you had to trust someone and found it difficult to so.
3. What are some of the themes of this parable?
4. What do the talents represent?
5. What promises does God make in this parable as he responds to the three servants?
6. Why is it difficult to trust God?
7. Why is trusting God so difficult for us? Why is it scary?
8. What in this week’s message was particularly helpful to you?
Scripture Philippians 3:13-15
Today as we gather to eat together, we will conclude our “What would Happen…” series by reflecting on our commitment to God with our financial resources. What would happen if we gave God more of our resources? What would happen in our personal lives and the impact on Asbury and God’s Kingdom? Let us prayerfully consider what percentage of our blessing that we can give to God for the building up of His church and Kingdom. Come join us for worship
and as we eat together as a church family and as we look ahead to all God may want to do at Asbury.
1. Why does focusing on the past (achievements and failures) hinder us from running the race God desires for us? Discuss why it is so difficult to keep from focusing on your past.
2. What past experiences (achievements and failures) have hindered you in your walk with God? How have you overcome those experiences?
3. How does the hope of a heavenly prize keep you encouraged to “press on” in your spiritual race?
4. What are your hopes and dreams for Asbury church?
5. What can you to do help achieve those hopes and dreams for Asbury?
6. What is one way you can increase your commitment to God as we celebrate Thanksgiving and begin the Advent season?
Scripture Daniel 6:10-16
Have you ever considered that God - who created the universe, who made a covenant with His people, who has called people through the generations to faithfulness, who provided His plan of salvation for you and the world, who formed the church, and continues to call
His people into faithfulness – has a perfect plan for you and me in this season. In this time in history, God has chosen us to come together at Asbury, has chosen our church to make a difference in our community and world through our worship, ministries, and outreach opportunities.
As we navigate this season ahead, know that it is God who is going to continue to lead us forward as His people. He has called us and set us aside for His purpose that will be fulfilled for Asbury and each of us. He has brought us to this time and place “for such a time
as this.” In this series, we will explore what God is calling us to as the church and we will see where God ultimately leads Asbury church in the future. Obedience is one of the things that God asks of those who believe in Him. Jesus said follow me. Come and reflect this week on Daniel’s story and Jesus’ call, as we consider this time in history that God has set before us.
1. What sticks out to you from Pastor Jonathan’s message about Daniel’s story?
2. Read Daniel 6:1-5. Talk about how Daniel was faithful in his duties, faultless in his character and fervent in his prayer life. Describe a time when you, or someone you know, experienced difficulty from others for loving Jesus.
3. Read Daniel 6:10. Daniel lived a life of prayer. If he started this practice at 15 (when he was taken into captivity) and was over 80, he would have prayed for 65 years three times a day. That equals 71,175 prayers offered to God. What can we learn from Daniel’s faithfulness in prayer?
4. Daniel’s enemies knew that he would break the newly instated law because he was so faithful. In following Jesus, what are you so faithful to on a daily basis that others know about your faith? Reflect on an area you could strengthen your faithfulness that others might know.
5. Where did Daniel achieve victory?
6. Encouraged by the story of Daniel and reflecting on Pastor Jonathan’s message, how can we have success and victory?
7. Daniel’s story and Jesus’ call is to stand firm in our faith regardless of the situations and circumstances around us. How can we develop our faith so it doesn’t waver or fade?
Scripture Phillipians 3:7-11
One of the most important things we can do in our walk of life and faith is to point others to Jesus. Why does this seem so difficult? Jesus tells us that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one can get to God except through Him. Hence, helping
people see Jesus should be the main thing we do. Today, we will examine what our priorities are and what our main priority should be.
1. What does it mean that Paul has counted the things listed in verses 4-6 as loss?
2. What are some earthly or religious achievements that you may need to count as “loss”?
3. What have you given up for the sake of following Christ? Was it worth it?
4. In what specific ways should we strive to know God more?
5. If there was one thing God was asking you to change in your own relationship with him right now in your own life, what would that be and how can we as a group pray for you to see that happen?
6. What can we do to help Jesus increase this week?
Scripture Matthew 28:16-20
One of the great roles that God desires for the church is for us to help Him expand His Kingdom. Jesus beckons us in several ways to do all we can to help make disciples. How did God define making disciples? How can we continue to make disciples as Jesus calls us to do?
Come worship with us as we reflect on God’s call for all of us.
1. From this weeks Scripture, what encouraged you, challenged you or
spoke to you most and why?
2. What are the four "ALL's" we see in this passage, and what are the implications? What is the main command?
3. Do you view the Great Commission as a joy or as a burden? What is the motivation and attitude that we should have as Christians when living out this passage? How can you personally grow in seeing it as a joy?
4. What does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus? What does it look like to make disciples, according to the passage?
5. What are the observable ways you are/can be making disciples in
your life-- both with nonbelievers and with other believers? What can
you do to go to the neighborhood and the nations? (praying for a
missionary, helping out a neighbor in need)
Scripture Mark 4:35-41
Storms of life are real. Throughout our lives we will experience literal and figurative storms that challenge our fortitude and sometimes challenge events in the future. How do we handle the storms of life? How does God meet us in the storms? This week we will reflect on the storms we face in life and seek strength from God to help us forward.
1. If hard things in life could be thought of as storms, what is the most recent storm you have faced? How did you get through it?
2. During this trying time in your life was there someone around who had the ability to calm your fears, change the situation, or help you out of the storm?
3. Was there anyone who could have helped you and didn’t? How did you feel about that person?
4. What did the disciples have to fear? What does the Bible tell us the disciples did about the storm?
5. Have you ever gone to God when you have been experiencing a storm in your life? How did it make a difference in your situation?
6. What does Jesus do when the disciples come to Him? How can we have faith even in the midst of our storms?
Scripture Isaiah 6:1-8
As we grow in our Christian faith, we experience God’s calling in your lives. In Isaiah 6, God calls Isaiah and Isaiah responds. The same God calls us and beckons us to come follow Him and to help be ambassadors for His Kingdom. Today we will look at Isaiah’s call and reflect on our call as christians and one of the great responsibilities for the church and for Asbury. Come join us as we discern God’s call moving forward.
1. Isaiah was living in challenging times. What are some of the challenges in our time – world, society, church, and as individuals?
2. What do you think might have been Isaiah’s initial response as the vision began to unfold? As you reflect on sharing our faith and being ambassadors of God’s Kingdom, what are your thoughts? Why do we feel burdened, too busy, or inadequate?
3. What did Isaiah mean when he said: “My lips are unclean and I live among a people of unclean lips? What sin do you need to turn over to God? Where does the church fall short as we seek to share Jesus with the world?
4. How do you think Isaiah felt after the burning coal experience? What does God’s forgiveness and His saving grace through Jesus Christ mean to you?
5. Why was Isaiah sent to people who didn’t see, hear, or understand? What is God calling us to do to live in the world and not of the world?
6. Pastor Jonathan talked about ‘awakening’. What does that mean for you? What can we do to help God continue to bring about an awakening today?
Scripture Esther 4:12-17
God has brought us all together here at Asbury Church for such a time as this. Asbury has a rich history in being the light of Christ in North Raleigh and the world. Where is God calling us moving forward? What is God calling you to in this time? Come and
worship with us as we reflect on our call to consider this time and the difference we can make for the Kingdom of God.
1. What troubling times have you experienced and are you experiencing?
2. It says the people fast, weep, and lament. It’s safe to assume they also prayed, although the text does not mention it. Have you ever tried prayer and fasting? Why or why not? What was it like? How can we use this spiritual discipline in troubling times?
3. What does Esther’s initial response in verse 11 tell us about what she was feeling? How does her response change in verse 16? “…if I perish, I perish.” (NIV)
4. What does Mordecai’s response in verse 14 tell us about his faith in God?
5. Where have we seen God and where do we see God at work in the troubles and challenges we face?
6. How does Esther tell us about Jesus and the gospel in this passage? What about her actions point forward to the things Jesus will do?
7. As you reflect on “For Such a Time as This”, what is God calling you to do in this season?
Scripture Judges 1:6-19
One of the most annoying and helpful things on the highway are rumble strips. The sound is terrible when you hit them, but if you aren't paying attention to where you are going, that sound just became a lifesaving alert. Thank you rumble strips!
Like a rumble strip along a highway, God has placed things along our path for our protection. They are not there to keep us from 'good things," but to alert us of danger ahead. So, what are these dangers? How do we know if our life is on the right path? Join us on Sunday as we talk through the "Rumble Strips" of God. See ya Sunday!
Scripture Genesis 12:1-4; 15:1-6; 16:1-6
This summer, I would personally like to invite you, your friends, and your family to join me in a new sermon series entitled, “Journey to the Promised Land.” Over the next few Sundays during our morning worship services, we will journey together with several Biblical characters that were key in God’s plan to bring His people into the Promised Land. We will examine their lives and see what God wants to say to us as it relates to our life-long journey to reach the Promised Land. I encourage you to also bring your bibles.
I hope you will make a commitment to join us for this series and to invite others to come and see God’s plan of covenant relationship, provision, and salvation for all people. May we always come to worship praying that God would speak into our lives and transform us, and may we pray that He would bless us richly as we participate on this journey together! Come and experience the power and goodness of our God as we journey to the promised land!

There are mentions of three Saint Valentines in history and all three were martyred, which has led to the special celebration of love that Americans celebrate on February 14. This February we want to celebrate this seasonal reflection on love with a series on "Radical Love" that will center on important relationships in our journey of life and faith. As we conclude our love talks, we reflect on loving others. Jesus says that the greatest thing we can do is to love God and the second greatest thing is to love others. He talked about it in all 4 gospels and gave us an example to live by throughout His life. Join us as we examine the life Jesus asks us to live, and as we reflect on what it means to love others.
